Border for the Square Center-piece for Table from Tatting and Netting

The border for the Square Center-piece for Table, on page 137 of Tatting and Netting, was one net edge that I did not need my husband's help with.  I figured it out and made it one evening while we were visiting. My granddaughter seemed to enjoy watching me net it.

After finishing Arctic Circle I started on Arrows.  This 22 inch diameter doily was first made while we were living in St. Anthony, Idaho, many years ago.

Now I have less than a dozen doilies to re-make. 

Another Plate Doiley with netted borders from Tatting and Netting

This is another edge we figured out while flying across country.  This is the middle of the three doilies pictured with the title Plate Doileys with Nettted Borders. It is found on page 130 from Tatting and Netting. Here is the netting without the embroidery.

Back in November I started making Arctic Circle.  Then life got busy.  I finished the doily but did not "find" the time to starch it until recently. It measures 20 inches in diameter.

The triangles made me think of icebergs, while the French Knots reminded me of snow, and the Eyelet Stitch called to mind ice floating on the ocean.

Plate Doiley with Netted Borders from Tatting and Netting

This net edge, found on page 130, underlies the two outer Plate Doilies with Netted Borders.  The netting for the two outer edges is the same.  The embroidery is what makes the two outer doilies look different. It was a challenge to get the same number of rows with skipped loops as the photo showed, the edge points to end as the same time as the rest of the points, and the right number of loops to start this sample.

Some people just stretch the length of thread going over the skipped loops.  That's how my grandmother taught me. Now I do that for one or two and then add another mesh stick and net over both mesh sticks for the long loops and over the regular mesh stick for the other loops.

Doileys with Netted Border from Tatting and Netting

A couple of weeks ago I flew across country with my husband. We spent much of the time on the flights figuring out instructions for the net edges that I still wanted to make from the book Tatting and Netting. Most of the ones we worked on were made for circular netting and I wanted to do a sample that was made going back and forth in rows. I knew netting and he knew math and between us we were able to figure out instructions for 5 different edges.

On page 134 of Tatting and Netting, there are two Doileys with Netted Borders shown - Nos. 31 and 32.  About a month ago I showed No. 31.  This is how the netting for No. 32 looks.  The photo in the book shows the edge with net embroidery.

If I were to use this edge, I would play with it a bit to get the single small loops more centered with respect to the patterns before it. It seems to me it is more to the right than it should be.

Netted Shawl from Tatting and Netting

Another square-mesh shawl is found on page 148 of one digital version of Tatting and Netting or page 138 in another digital version.  The instructions for the center of the shawl and the first 5 rows of the border are the same as the shawl from last week.

The rest of the border is different. I used a #3 knitting needle, a 1/4" flat mesh stick, and a 1/2" flat mesh stick when I made the sample of the border.

Tatting and Netting includes a pattern for a square net shawl made using square-mesh netting,.  Once the center square is finished instructions are given for the border.   The instructions for the border are listed on page 145 in one digital copy and page 135 in another digital copy.

The photo in the book shows a corner of the shawl. This sample I made does not show the corner, just the border.  I used a #3 knitting needle, a 1/4" flat mesh stick, and a 1/2" flat mesh stick.  One change needed in the text was on row 6.  The book said "put 2 stitches in every other loop."  The photo shows 2 knots in each loop.

Fancy End for Netted Scarf or Throw from Tatting and Netting

"Articles of Use and Ornament" is the last section found in Tatting and Netting. The first pattern in this section is a Netted Scarf or Throw.  It is found on page 143 in one digital version of the book or page 133 in the another digital version.  I made the fancy end for this scarf or throw using a #3 knitting needle, a 1/4" flat mesh stick, and a 1/2" flat mesh stick.  The only change I noticed was that row 15 needed 4 knots tied into the last loop.
