A Basic 7-Square, Square-mesh Scallop edge with 1 Final Scallop


This Basic Scallop uses just one scallop to form the right vertical side. It has a border of 4 squares, 3 points along each side of a scallop, and 7 squares across the bottom of the scallop.






The instructions for this scallop are as follows:

First Vandyke Scallop with straight vertical side                                                        
1              Net 2 knots in the foundation loop. (2 loops in the row)
2              Net one knot in each loop except for the last loop, net 2 knots in the last loop. (3 loops in the row)
3              Net one knot in each loop except for the last loop, net knots in the last loop. (4 loops in the row)
4              Net one knot in each loop except for the last loop, net 2 knots in the last loop. (5 loops in the row)                              
5              Net 1 knot in each loop. (5 loops in the row)
6              Net 1 knot in each loop except for the last loop, net 2 knots in the last loop. (6 loops in the row)
7              Net 1 knot in each loop. (6 loops in the row)
8              Net 1 knot in each loop except for the last loop, net 2 knots in the last loop. (7 loops in the row)
9              Net 1 knot in each loop. (7 loops in the row)

  4. Tie the foundation-loop cord into a circle and attach it to a tension device.
  5. Net the first two loops together without using a mesh stick.

A Basic 9-Square, Square-mesh Scallop Edge with 1 Final Scallop


About a year ago I started showing Vandyke edges with square-mesh netting and explaining the various ways that the right vertical edge needed to be made. Recently my husband and I finally finished work on square-mesh scallop edgings. I decided to work on scallops with an odd number of squares along the bottom of the scallop. The only even scallop I found was located in Treasures in Needlework and right now my brain will not wrap around how to create an even scallop that looked nice.

Just like the Vandykes, these scallops did not all finish the right vertical edge in the same way. Again there were four different ways to finish that vertical edge, but not the same for ways. In addition, we had to figure out how to shape a scallop with with netting.

This Basic Scallop uses just one scallop to form the right vertical side. It has a border of 19 squares, 6 points along each side of a scallop, and 9 squares across the bottom of the scallop.




The instructions for this scallop are as follows:


Row 1:       Net 2 knots in the foundation loop. (2 loops in the row)
Row 2:       Net 1 knot in the first loop, net 2 knots in the last loop. (3 loops in the row)
Rows 3-19: Net 1 knot in each loop except for the last loop, net 2 knots in the last loop. (20 loops in the last row)
Row 20:     Net 1 knot in each loop. (20 loops in the row)
Row 21:     Net 1 knot in each loop except for the last loop, net 2 knots in the last loop. (21 loops in the row)
