In March I went to visit my oldest son and his family. While there I saw a pair of knit slippers. I just had to ask for the instructions; it was that kind of slipper! All garter stitch and two colors, it felt soft and padded to the foot.
It was made in a rectangular shape. One end was sewed together to form the heel.

It was finished by gathering the stitches at the toe,

and then sewing down toward the heel leaving just room enough for the foot to enter

I'm checking with the lady I learned from to see if she has any written directions. Otherwise, I just have the notes I scribbled for myself.

These are the slippers (but made with an ankle cuff) my recently passed grandmother use to make. She made hundreds of pairs and all the kids and grandkids always had multiple pairs. Most of our family's households even keep a basket of them at the front doors for guests. They are so cozy, but never too hot and the pattern has been passed down in my family. For a few years, we were even making them for charity fundraisers.
I can't recommend enough that people try making these slippers. They are comforting in a way that not many clothing items can be, and when you can turn something like this into memories of nostalgia, they become that much more special.
