More Smaller Circles of Netting - rows not rounds
Last week the small circle of netting looked a little rectangular. It also had 26 loops in the circumference and I wanted only 24 loops. To make that happen, I started and ended with 5 loops in the row. This circle has a total of 108 knots.
Row Instructions
1 Tie thread onto foundation loop, net 5 loops into foundation loop. (5 loops in the row)

This is a smaller circle of netting. There are 123 total knots in this circle and only 26 loops around the circumference.

When is a circle not a circle
In attempting to create a circle of netting using rows instead of rounds and with about 50 loops around the circumference, I made some changes to the sample from last week.
I reduced the number of loops in the first and last rows. However, I also increased the number of increase and decrease rows to the extent that this piece of netting looks more like an octagon rather than a circle.
This sample has 47 loops around the circumference and a total of 486 knots.
Instructions
Row 1: Tie thread onto foundation loop, net 6 loops into foundation loop.
Row 2: Net 2 knots in the first loop, net 1 knot in each loop except the last loop, net 2 knots the last loop.
Row 3: Net 1 knot in each loop.
Row 4: Net 2 knots in the first loop, net 1 knot in each loop except the last loop, net 2 knots the last loop.
Row 5: Net 1 knot in each loop.

More circles of netting - rows not rounds
Achieving the look of a circle using rows instead of rounds can be tricky. It is necessary to balance the number of starting and ending loops, the number of plain rows, and the number of increase and decrease rows. This sample looks more like a square or rectangle with rounded corners. It is even more challenging when a certain number of loops around the circumference is desired. I wanted there to be about 50 loops around the netting.
This pattern contains 438 knots and has 46 loops around the circumference.
Instructions
Row 1: Tie thread onto foundation loop, net 10 loops into foundation loop.
Row 2: Net 2 knots in the first loop, net 1 knot in each loop except the last loop, net 2 knots the last loop.
Row 3: Net 1 knot in each loop.
Row 4: Net 2 knots in the first loop, net 1 knot in each loop except the last loop, net 2 knots the last loop.
Row 5: Net 1 knot in each loop.
Row 6: Net 2 knots in the first loop, net 1 knot in each loop except the last loop, net 2 knots the last loop.

Circle of netting - created using rows, not rounds
This month I've been working on creating net circles in rows and figuring out how many loops they have around the edge. This particular piece of netting has a total of 24 rows (the first row of knots was attached to the foundation loop and has been undone), 256 knots, and 35 points around the circumference where a knot could be tied.
From one perspective this circle looks like it has been done in diamond-mesh netting; from another angle, though, it looks like square-mesh netting. Which is it? That depends on your perspective since square-mesh netting is diamond-mesh netting turned slightly and pulled taut.
This circle can be used as the base of a bag or the center of a hairnet.

A Rectangular Square-Mesh Frame an Odd Number of Squares in the Width and with an Even Number of Squares in the Length
Over the past few weeks I have tried various combinations of odd and even numbers of squares to create a net frame. This week there is only one variation left to try (odd width and even length), so I decided to make a net frame with the following numbers:
- the outer width 11 squares and the inner width 5 squares
- the outer length 16 squares and the inner length 10 squares
- the border 3 squares
Before starting
the actual netting:
1. Fill a netting needle or shuttle with
thread or cord.
2. Attach it to a foundation loop. To do this:
a. Tie a slip knot in the thread or cord coming
from the needle or shuttle. Leave a long
tail, at least 6 to 8 inches.
b. Slip the foundation-loop cord through the
slipknot.
c. Tie the foundation-loop cord into a circle
thereby creating a foundation loop.
d. Tighten the slipknot.
3. Attach the foundation loop to a tension
device.
4. Choose a mesh stick.

A Rectangular Square-Mesh Frame with an Even Number of Squares in the Width and an Odd Number of Squares in the Length
Having made the rectangular square-mesh frame with an odd number in both the width and length, as well as with an even number in both the width and length, I wondered what would be different if I mixed odd and even numbers in both the width and the length. I decided to make a frame with the following numbers:
- the outer width 12 squares and the inner width 4 squares
- the outer length 15 squares and the inner length 7 squares
- the border 4 squares
Instructions
Before starting the
